Battle Effects Simulators (BESS)
The purpose of the CSS manufactured BESS range of pyrotechnics is to simulate the terminal effects of rapid and single fire guns, artillery and mortars, grenades, mines and other anti personnel weapons, and the muzzle effects of small arms in the field training environment by using remote electrical ignition.
BESS pyrotechnics provide both visual and audible effects that are used to enhance realism during training exercises and demonstrations to simulate a live battlefield.
BESS pyrotechnics are used by Military, Police and Security Services for training applications, including damage control exercises, target detection and indication and retaliatory effects. The BESS pyrotechnics may be used in a variety of field exercises, both one sided and two sided, by day and by night, in any season, weather or terrain.
The typical training uses for BESS pyrotechnics listed below are indicative only and are not exhaustive.

Packagings and Markings
The appropriate packaging, marking and labelling of dangerous goods (including explosives and pyrotechnics) is paramount in ensuring the product can be correctly identified, stored, transported or used safely without unknown risks to health.
Dangerous goods and hazardous substances are assigned to UN numbers and proper shipping names according to their hazard classification and their composition. Any package containing dangerous goods used by CSS has been tested and approved by the competant authority prior to use.
All products stored, handled or sold by CSS are appropriately packaged, marked and labelled as per the mandatory requirements of the Australian Dangerous Goods Code and/or the Australian Explosives Code.
Where products are sold to Defence Forces, additional requirements, as detailed in Defence Standard 08-10 (Part 20), Marking of Ammunition Packages, are met to ensure the packaging, markings, labelling and products will survive extreme conditions, rough handling and long term storage.
Alternate packagings, markings and labels can be used where standards and regulations differ to those used in Australia.
